Minister Snubs Ashley Advice

By June 20, 2024No Comments

Independent Member for Clark, Kristie Johnston, has expressed her frustration following the Minister for Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch, refusing to establish a multidisciplinary taskforce to oversee the removal of children currently on remand at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre.

“TasCOSS, the Children’s Commissioner and the Legislative Council have all called for the urgent establishment of this taskforce, and it’s disappointing and extremely disrespectful that the Minister is not only turning his back on these organisations but effectively turning his back on those young people currently incarcerated at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre,” Ms Johnston said.

“The Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings made it perfectly clear that the Ashley Youth Detention Centre should closed as a matter of priority.  I call on the Premier to intervene and override his Minister and collaborate with these community organisations to urgently establish this taskforce to get these children out of Ashley as soon as possible,” Ms Johnston said.

Full transcript of Ms Johnston’s question:

Thank you Honourable Speaker.

My question is to the Minister for Children and Youth

In light of the unopposed passage through the Other Place of a motion seeking the establishment of a multidisciplinary taskforce to work to remove children on remand from Ashley Youth Detention Centre, will the Minister now act to establish that multidisciplinary taskforce as urgently called for by a coalition of community sector and civil society organisations, including TasCOSS and others, by the Children’s Commissioner, and now the Legislative Council?
