Johnston Slams Government and Opposition Inhumanity

Independent Member for Clark, Kristie Johnston, has slammed the Government and Opposition for failing to support an amendment to the Racing Regulation and Integrity Bill which would see the insertion of the word ‘humanely’, and make the humane treatment of racing animals one of its core functions.

This Bill introduces a new Tasmanian Racing Integrity Commissioner and abolishes the Office of Racing Integrity

“Liberal and Labor’s refusal to simply insert the word ‘humanely’ is absolutely disgusting and proves that the racing industry in Tasmania stinks more than what I thought.”

“A simple word which could make a world of difference to the lives of greyhounds and horses in the racing industry and would make Tasracing accountable for treating animals humanely, but they couldn’t even do that.  It’s disgusting,” Ms Johnston said.

“The argument from Racing Minister, Jane Howlett and Labor Leader, Dean Winter, that the racing industry simply has ‘a few bad apples’ simply won’t wash anymore, and the Tasmanian people have every right to be furious with this selfish lack of consideration and care for animals who are trapped in this abhorrent industry,” Ms Johnston said.
