Kristie Johnston, Question to the Minister for the Environment – 11 June 2024

Thank you Madam Speaker.

My question is to the Minister for Environment.

The Climate Change Act requires that the Government produce an Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plan for the transport sector by November 30 2023. Six months later, we still have no plan to reduce emissions in the transport sector, and therefore this state.

We aren’t seeing the switch needed to public transport to reduce emissions. And despite evidence that subsidies are the biggest determinant in allowing people to switch to electric vehicles,[1] the Government’s electric vehicle rebate scheme has been capped at 375 reservations, all of which are currently reserved.

When will the Government take the urgent action that is needed on climate change, and release its overdue Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plan for the transport sector with commitments which create real emissions reductions?
