Archbishop Preaches Hate in Schools

Independent Member for Clark, Kristie Johnston, will join Equality Tasmania today in calling out the deeply hurtful, disrespectful and discriminatory letter sent by the Archbishop last week to Catholic school parents.

As a parent of a child in a Catholic school I was disgusted to receive this letter that condemns and discriminates against so many in my community. The Archbishop seeks to ostracise from schools those who don’t subscribe to his ultra conservative Catholic views.

The letter condemns those who support women’s reproductive rights, euthanasia, divorcees, unmarried couples who live together, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. The Archbishop’s letter is a thinly veiled threat to these people that they should leave their employment or enrollment in a Catholic school.

I know that there are many Catholics who strongly disagree with the Archbishop’s views and support inclusive practices in schools.

I stand with all those who are impacted and support Equality Tasmania’s call for a right of reply. This kind of hateful speech has no place in our community.
