“Trainer of the Year” – A Cruel Joke

By October 19, 2023No Comments

Today in Parliament I asked the Minister for Racing, Mr Ellis why Tasracing has anointed “trainer of the Year” to greyhound, thoroughbred and harness trainers who have done nothing but bring racing into disgrace.

This racing Minister says he wants a racing industry with integrity and animal welfare at its heart, and then fronts parliament and condones rewarding three notorious trainers.

Is this a joke? Below is the text of my question:

Minister, on Tuesday you tabled the annual report of Tasracing in this House.

In that report, Anthony Bullock, Greyhounds, Scott Brunton, thoroughbreds, and Ben Yole, harness racing, were all acknowledged as “trainer of the year” for their respective codes.

The eligibility requirements for these awards, published on Tasracing’s website, makes any person who, and I quote, “… conducted themselves in a manner which has undermined the integrity, or reputation, or public image of racing is ineligible for any award.”

Minister, let me refresh your memory. Mr Bullock is currently suspended, under investigation for live baiting, and it has been revealed he’s been operating without proper approvals for a decade. Mr Brunton, has been stripped of his licence in the wake of a Federal Court order to wind up his business for not paying his tax obligations. My Yole, is under current investigation by Mr Murrihy for race fixing allegations.

Minister, is this a joke? Three of the most notorious trainers in Tasmania declared “trainer of the year”.

Minister, the reputation of racing in Tasmania is in tatters. Will you pull Tasracing into line, require them to apply the awards policy and immediately revoke these awards.
