Thank you Mr Speaker
My question is to the Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management.
Minister, we have been waiting months for the draft Bill and funding model for the Tasmanian Fire Service.
I am advised that our State’s 3500 volunteers have suffered years of underfunding, poor training, and run-down stations and vehicles.
Minister, we are approaching what could be our most dangerous fire season in a generation with our volunteers’ morale at an all-time low. A 35-year veteran volunteer told me he has never been more broken.
You and I both know that our volunteers, despite their disillusions and frustrations, will not shirk in their duty to keep us all safe this summer.
But, Minister, we can’t keep taking our volunteers for granted.
Note Minister that as I stand here we have volunteer crews already working at Ellendale ahead of the warmer weather expected this week. Time is not on our side with the fire season fast approaching.
Minister, when will you release the draft Bill and funding model for the Tasmanian Fire Service?
