Kristie Johnston, Question to the Minister for Racing – 23 March 2023

Thank you Mr Speaker.

My question is to the Minister for Racing.

Minister, greyhound welfare advocates estimate conservatively that there are approximately 700 dogs entering and exiting the racing industry every year in Tasmania. That means 700 dogs a year need rehoming. This is the industry’s “wastage” – unwanted dogs.

At best, the various adoption programs are managing to rehome approximately 150 dogs a year.

Minister, what happens to the other 550 dogs a year who aren’t rehomed?

Under the new TasRacing GAP program, designed to get more dogs through the system, how long will these dogs sit on death row before that “difficult end of life decision” is made and they are killed?
