Thank you Mr Speaker
My question is to the Treasurer.
Treasurer, the truth is that the Government relies on the not-for-profit sector to deliver essential community services, at a fraction of the cost if those services were to be provided by public servants.
Therefore, it not only makes social sense, it makes economic sense for Government to fund the community sector properly.
However, there are dozens of organisations running on the smell of an oily rag, and without an increase in funding there is a huge risk that vulnerable people desperate for support will be turned away.
There are increasing numbers of people living on our streets, emergency departments struggling to cope and families being torn apart by addiction and domestic violence. Now, more than ever, we need to ensure that essential services are accessible, fully operational and well-resourced.
In the last 20 years CPI has increased by 71% while indexation to the industry by only 45%.
That is not a sustainable situation.
Treasurer, will you commit here and now to honour the call from TasCOSS for a fair and reasonable funding increase of 9.5% in this year’s budget?
