It is always pleasing to welcome another independent member to state parliament.
I congratulate Dean Harriss on his victory in the Legislative Council division of Huon, which became vacant after Labor’s Dr Bastian Seidel quit the seat because of, as he put it, the “toxic environment” within Tasmanian Labor.
It is always good to get more independents into politics. I don’t know Mr Harriss’s social or political views but that’s not the point: as long as he sticks to his convictions, listens to his constituents and decides all matters on merit, then he’s doing the right thing.
The clear message I’m hearing is that people are sick of party hacks that just toe the party line. I look forward to Mr Harriss making a productive contribution to the Tasmanian community.
