“Yesterday during budget estimate scrutiny, I questioned the Minister for Children and Youth, Sarah Courtney, over safety concerns for children at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre,” Ms Johnston said.
“I asked her two straightforward questions: could she confirm that individuals named in the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse did not still work at Ashely; and if she could give a guarantee that the children at Ashley right now are not at risk of abuse.
“She could not answer either, and was only saved when the committee hearing was suspended for the day.
“To compound matters, the Attorney-General when asked this morning if individuals named in the Royal Commission continue to work at Ashely, was also unable to give a straightforward answer.
“Ashely is a mess. It fails children. We have heard yesterday yet again allegations of sexual abuse and bullying of staff, and continued serious accusations of a highly abusive place for children.
“It is past time for the Government to end this now.”
