FIREARMS ... My speech for a gun ownership cap

Introducing a cap is not a slur on lawful firearms owners. It reduces the size of the pool available to be stolen, diverted, and misused, and that’s directly in line with the advice of our police – the very people we are asking to face those guns. 

ELECTORAL BOUNDARY CHANGES ... I will be a candidate for Clark at the next state election.

I’ll stay in Clark to further my established relationships and advocacy there. And, I will work to introduce myself to “new-Clark” and learn from those communities.   

EQUITY ... Gay and divorced teachers discriminated against

A two-year Parliamentary inquiry into discrimination and bullying in Tasmanian schools has handed down its findings, showing homosexual and divorced teachers are being discriminated against by the state’s Catholic education system.

BUDGET ... Fair share revenue raising

The Treasury Department has long been sounding the alarm about Tasmania’s spiralling debt. Our credit rating has been downgraded. The International Monetary Fund is talking about Canberra bailing us out. Add the economic shock from war.

GREYHOUNDS ... Journey to end greyhound racing continues

Greyhounds will unfortunately continue to suffer while the journey to end greyhound racing continues in Tasmania.      

STADIUM ... Cost-plus contract blows cost cap

If we get locked into a COST- PLUS contract for the AFL stadium then Tasmanians bear the inflationary price rises on materials and sky is the limit when it comes to the final stadium cost.

FORESTRY ... Suspend new log contracts until new law certainty

I support suspending government negotiations for new, long-term wood supply contracts until the impact is known of recent changes to federal law (the EPBC Act). 

HEALTH !!! Breast Screen Bus Disgrace

Impacts of the Health Department bungling of a replacement breast screening bus will unfortunately continue being felt into next year as delays over its procurement continue.

Private Members Bill: Returns money stolen to gamble

Money stolen to gamble should where possible be returned to the victim. My bill being tabled in November 2025 allows the Supreme Court to order the return of stolen money and require gambling companies to act if they think a punter is using stolen money.

My commitment to Tasmanians, my approach to Parliament

As this new Parliament begins, I want Tasmanians to know the principles that guide my decisions. 

Eating Salmon? ... Killing Tasmania

I support an end to salmon farming in our coastal waterways, as does the majority of my community in Clark.  Intensive farming has major impacts on our environment – bulk antibiotic use, mass fish deaths, fish waste on our beaches and endangering the Maugean skate.

Northgate Electorate Office Pop-Up ... Come Say Hi!

Always great to see friendly faces at my regular electorate office pop-up at Northgate Shopping Centre. It’s a great way for me to listen to the community.

Meet Kristie

Kristie Johnston is a genuine, experienced independent House of Assembly MP, born and bred in the electorate of Clark where she lives with her family and beloved pets.

Kristie was first elected to Parliament in 2021, then again in 2024, after bringing order and function to a then troubled City of Glenorchy council as Mayor from 2014 to 2021.

She has an Arts/Law degree with a major in Public Policy from UTAS, has a Masters of Criminology and Corrections, worked in the community legal sector, and has a strong interest in land use planning and public transport – particularly light rail.

Kristie’s advocacy in State Parliament gives voice to community concerns about the economy, housing, equity, integrity, the Macquarie Point stadium, and racing industry accountability.

Kristie is a skilled Parliamentary operator, working hard to hold the Government – and Opposition – to account in the interests of all Tasmanians.

She can also be found pulling beers, listening to the community and putting issues to the “pub test”, as publican of the Maypole Hotel in New Town.
